*Butterfly World

South Africa’s biggest free-flying butterfly park features a display house and a large indoor garden where visitors walk around while exotic butterflies from all over the planet flitter around.

*Drakenstein Lion Park

Offers kids a chance to see captive lions mooching around in the sun. The lions here are captive-born beasts who cannot ever be reintroduced to the wild.

*Imhoff Farm

A handy one-stop shop for child-friendly activities. The complex also offers craft shops and restaurants, making it a sensible full-day destination.

*Le Bonheur Crocodile Farm

The farm is home to about 1000 crocodiles that mostly spend their days lazing around and baking in the sun. Perilously low walkways take you around the enclosures.

*Monkey Town

The park is home to 230 primates, ranging from lion-tailed macaques to chimpanzees to spider monkeys to the old South African favourite, vervet monkeys.

*Tygerberg Zoo

The zoo keeps smaller animals, with the biggest they have being zebra. Expect to see chattering monkeys and plenty of plodding tortoises.

*West Coast Ostrich Ranch

The ranch allows visitors to interact up close with their flightless birds, and children will take great delight in being able to sit on an ostrich.
